Student Leadership Program
St. Edward School's Student Leadership Program was introduced by former principal Sr. Nancy Anderson in the early 1990s. The program was designed to promote 5th-8th grade students’ interest in community service while putting into practice the teachings of Jesus. In the past two years, we have broadened the program to include 10 core competencies (see diagram above).
St. Edward School believes that investing in our students during the foundational years is critical to individual growth and future success. We provide age-appropriate opportunities for development both inside and outside of the classroom environment, which we refer to as our ten core competencies - critical components of the St. Edward School experience. These competencies empower students to successfully solve problems today and in the future. They are defined as:
Faith Formation - Competency in faith formation requires students to demonstrate the abililty to experience God’s presence in their life through prayer, reading the bible and participating in the mass and the sacraments.
Stewardship - Competency in stewardship requires students to demonstrate the ability to understand, value and care for all of God’s creation.
Communication - Competency in communication requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to speak, read, write and listen clearly, in person and through a variety of media.
Problem Solving - Competency in problem solving requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to determine what is wrong and how to fix it, while working independently or in groups.
Social Interaction - Competency in social interaction requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to seek out other opinions, resolve disagreements and help reach conclusions in group settings.
Effective Citizenship - Competency in effective citizenship requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to act with an informed awareness of issues and participate in civic life through volunteer activities and leadership.
Critical Thinking - Competency in critical thinking requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to use experience, knowledge, reason and belief to form carefully considered judgments.
Moral Development - Competency in moral development requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to recognize different value systems, including their own; appreciate moral dimensions of their decisions and accept responsibility for them.
Developing a Global Perspective - Competency in developing a global perspective requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to appreciate economic, social and ecological connections that link the world’s nations and people.
Creative Engagement - Competency in creative engagement requires students to demonstrate and master the ability to engage with the arts and draw meaning and value from artistic expression.
Mastering the ten core competencies is what gives a St. Edward student the power to stand out from the crowd.
At St. Edward School, we believe that success is not measured in awards and recognition. It is measured by changing the world, one student at a time.
